“Again!” Kane yelled.

“I thought you said we were going to finish up an hour ago?” I whined with my shoulders slumped in exhaustion.

“We would have been done an hour ago if you had showed any signs of progress, but you insist on fighting me tooth and nail. It’s as if you don’t want to succeed.”

“Holy shit, how many times do I have to tell you that I am trying everything I can, but it’s not working!” Flames ignited all over my body and I yelped when I smelled burning hair.

Damnit! Most of my bra and underwear peeked through the destroyed portions of my dress and a part of my hair was singed. Why could I only produce a great amount of fire when I wasn’t trying?

“Surely you will restore my clothing this time? I look ridiculous.”

Kane circled me slowly and I raised my chin in defiance. I didn’t care if he saw my disgrace. I think. When his sparkling emerald eyes looked at me, my resolve shattered to the winds.

“I think you look rather delicious, not ridiculous.”

Holy hell, was he flirting?

“And a deal is a deal. You have not earned it yet. But I will restore your hair because it’s too lovely a color to be left ruined.” Kane gently ran his fingers through my hair and I thought I was going to keel over then and there. Looking down, I saw my long deep burgundy locks were no longer burnt and as his fingertips brushed the bare skin of my arm, my eyes involuntarily closed in delight.

When I realized I was giving myself away I snapped out of it. “Fine, I guess that’ll do. I think we’re done for today!” I ran away from him as fast as I could, still fearful he could smell my desire and I heard his stupidly wonderful laughter from a distance.

I was exhausted. It felt like Kane was trying to punish me in the last few sessions we’d had, and my thighs shook with every dreadful step back to my room. I sarcastically laughed to myself that Kane kept insisting that it was embarrassing how easy he was taking it on me and that of course only made me seethe in anger. The aches and pains of my body told me I had been working hard. My magic was improving, but only slightly. I couldn’t find whatever connection I needed to master it the way I should. But I felt a small glimmer of achievement that I was able to steal another weapon, a spear head that was so dull that I doubted it would have any use other than chucking it at someone, but a win was a win. My growing collection made a sinister smile bloom on my lips.

Adelram had been conspicuously absent from my last few training sessions, which normally I wouldn’t have minded, but if I wanted to get as much information as possible to break this curse and fulfill the prophecy, then I needed his expertise. Kane’s father was something of an annoying enigma to me and the longer I thought about him, the dizzier I felt.
